Thom Rouse-Origin of Style
One ear to the ground - One ear to your heart: The Origin of Style
Finding your style is not about who’s style is best or what style is better; it’s about being original in creating the images that only you can create. We all know the difference between The Stones and The Beatles, Elvis and Sinatra, Bach and Beethoven. And although many may argue about “Who’s the best”, the reason we know them at all is that each is unique. Without their original “styles”, we might never have heard of them at all. Commercially successful style is a balance between art and the market. As artists and photographers, we can take an approach that helps us to define our style, allows us to be true to ourselves, and also enhances our success in the market.
- It’s often said that “you don’t find your style, your style finds you”. We need to give our style the opportunity to find us.
- We must be “visually literate”. Once we know what great images looks like, we can find a way to create great images in our own style.
- “Process”, is a map of your style. Taking an inventory of your personal approach to image making provides control of your process and defines your style
